Interim Housing Sites

Whittier First Day operates two primary interim housing sites, each providing specialized care and support for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Bridge/Interim Shelter

Whittier Housing Center: Located in Whittier, this center offers a total of 45 crisis beds tailored for specific populations. It includes 18 beds dedicated to the Measure H – Strategy B7 Program, funded by LAHSA, for justice-involved single men and women who have recently exited institutions. Additionally, it provides 16 crisis beds referred by LAHSA outreach teams, and 11 beds funded part of the year by the LAHSA Winter Shelter program, subsequently used for various municipal purposes. The Whittier Housing Center utilizes a harm reduction and trauma-informed care approach, ensuring that residents receive the support needed to transition from crisis situations to stable living conditions. Annually, this center serves approximately 180 unduplicated individuals.

Hondo Center for Healing (Downey): This DHS-funded facility in Downey offers 80 beds and delivers intensive case management and clinical services to homeless clients with complex health, mental health, and substance abuse issues. The center focuses on holistic healing, providing tailored care plans that address the multifaceted needs of each resident. With a dedicated team of case managers and healthcare professionals, the Hondo Center for Healing supports approximately 250 unduplicated individuals each year, helping them move toward permanent housing and stability.

Pathway Home Interim Housing Program: Recently approved by LAHSA, this program focuses on expanding outreach to individuals living in encampments, with the goal of bringing them inside and guiding them toward permanent housing. The program employs a harm reduction approach and provides tailored case management and support services to meet the unique needs of this population.
